Obviously Andrew does not know what biomass is. Personally I like the use of methane digesters for getting energy out of biomass.

Life forms on earth are carbon-based including crops, plants, etc… Any crop that is grown can be converted into oil or fuels/energy or any other organic carbon-based substance…even garbage and waste products…through a variety of processes like thermal depolymerization, plasma processes, bacterial methods, microwaves, etc… Algae and bacteria can be used to produce oil…liquefied CO2 can be converted, non-food crops or biomass like tobacco or bamboo, corn, soybeans, wheat, sugar cane, etc… saline tolerant crops could open up a half million extra square miles of land for energy crops, reduce fresh water needs and some used for human/animal consumption. Crop wastes or renewable non-food junk crops can also be converted into oil and biofuels and many processes are carbon neutral or negative…mitigating global warming issues.

"Is Garbage The Solution To Tackling Climate Change?
ScienceDaily (Oct. 3, 2009) — Converting the rubbish that fills the world’s landfills into biofuel may be the answer to both the growing energy crisis and to tackling carbon emissions, claim scientists in Singapore and Switzerland. New research published in Global Change Biology: Bioenergy, reveals how replacing gasoline with biofuel from processed waste could cut global carbon emissions by 80%."
