Biomass in general is an organically generated energy form.

In general for bio-mass energy we have a few basics that we go to.

Wood chips - Burn these to generate Heat/Steam - with steam you can drive an electric turbine to generate electricity.
Corn - Burn this to generate heat/steam- with steam you can drive an electric turbine to generate electricity.
Ethanol/Methanol - Through a distilation process a way to create liquid fuels from organic material.
Landfill Gas - If you clean it you can burn this to geneate heat/Steam - with steam you can drive a turbine to generate electricity.

I hope you find this useful

It's made of organic matter like plants grown to be burnt as fuel.
Try this site if you need more... It explains what biomass is and the energy part is just saying what its being used for.

What is biomass? Biomass is a renewable energy originated from plants and animals. It's organic material from plants and animals (microorganisms) that contain stored energy from the sun. Through photosynthesis plants absorb the sun's energy which is then passed on to animals and people that eat them.

A lot of wood-related industries use "hog fuel" boilers to generate steam for generating electricity, process steam, or just heating. Hog fuel is waste from making lumber or paper.

Of course, wood was once the predominant energy source to the point of massive deforestation. We nearly drove the sperm whale to extinction for whale oil to use as lamp oil and more recently for automatic transmission fluid. In the days when automatic transmissions were hydraulic instead of today's computer controlled transmissions, whale oil was vastly superior as transmission fluid to synthetics and this would've been as recently as the 80's and early to mid 90's.

Note that coal, and crude oil are also biomass energy, they just happen to be fossilized biomass.

No. Different molecules have different quantities of energy per mass. For instance fats are higher in energy per mass than carbohydrates. Therefore an organism that has a high proportion of fat will have more energy per mass than an organism that has a high proportion of carbohydrates. Therefore 2 billion calories of an organism that is high in fat will weigh less than 2 billion calories of an organism that is high in carbohydrates.

Nuclear energy will be questioned for many years as a viable answer to energy needs.

Some say nuclear energy is necessary to minimise global warming. If you want to be in this debate you need to know more.

The nuclear debate is growing in importance as governments everywhere are looking for ways to maintain economic growth and reduce the effects of global warming. But it now looks like the disadvantages are just too great.
