How is energy produced by biomass?

I really need people to answer this because its for an assignment that i am doing and the draft is due soon.

The most common method is by burning it for heat, or to produce steam.

Biomass can partially decompose, as in alcohol production, or methane production, wasting a part of the energy available, but yielding a product that is readily used by some devices, like cars.

Or the biomass can be burned in a steam engine.
Then we have some biomass digesters that both yield say methane or alcohol, and the heat of partial decomposition is directly used to heat buildings.

We or our animals eat biomass (vegetation) and then we do mechanical work, and our bodies are warmed.

Biomass is a vague term. It means any plant or animal that can be converted to energy. The simplest way for biomass to produce energy is a wood stove. There is a big biomass powerplant near me that burns wood chips and other wood waste. It started as a way for a sawmill to use their waste. Now other mills sell them their slabs, edgings and sawdust. Many truckloads of logs are brought in daily and chipped to burn in their boiler. With the demand for electricity and the price of fossil fuels I expect to see more built soon.
